Originally created as a place where “liberated” slaves could reestablish themselves in Africa, Liberia was the first African republic to proclaim its independence and is Africa’s first and oldest modern republic. Between January 7, 1822, and the American Civil War, more than 15,000 freed and free-born black people from the U.S., and 3,198 Afro-Caribbeans, relocated to the settlement. Descendants of those settlers currently comprise 5% of Liberia’s population, with the large majority still being indigenous peoples.
The country has struggled for many years. Two civil wars killed 250,000 people (about 8% of the population), displaced a million more, severely affected national infrastructure and basic social services, and shrank Liberia’s economy by nearly 90%! 83% of the population lives below the international poverty line, and corruption is endemic at every level of the Liberian government.
The Liberian church has struggled as well. According to Operation World, “For decades Christians have compromised with evil on an alarming scale.” Many so-called Christian churches condone sin, witchcraft, polygamy and alcoholism. There are few trained spiritual leaders; many have been killed or have fled the country.
Upon invitation from some national pastors in 2017, ITEM began its work in Liberia, serving pastors who lead small churches in undeveloped parts of the country. There is good leadership among the Liberian host pastors, and they support ITEM’s desire to encourage strong, Bible-based ministry. They are hosting seminars, but not yet leading their own.
Pray for Liberia:
- Pray for Michael Allen (ITEM Coordinator). Michael is a strong leader, and active in ministry. In addition to his work with ITEM, he pastors a church and is a school administrator.
- Dan Packer (ITEM Associate) has worked with this team to get things started. Pray for an Associate to be raised up to support growing ministry efforts in this country.
- Please pray for wisdom to know when the Liberian team are Biblically and theologically prepared to move ahead and begin training and mentoring others.
